Independent Medical Exams

Unbiased and Comprehensive IMEs

Independent Medical Examinations, or IMEs, are medical assessments conducted by a qualified physician or other licensed healthcare professional at the request of a third-party entity. IMEs are valuable tools in determining an individual’s fitness to work or  the severity of a disability or injury.

When to Use An IME

IMEs may be ordered for several reasons but include in cases where there is conflicting medical information, when adjudicating short term disability or when looking for clarity on a medical illness.

IMEs may also be requested for personal injury cases or by an employer looking to obtain clearance for duty.

Additional IME Offerings

Certified Exams

Certified Exams are injury exams that insurance companies request under the Alberta Insurance Act. A Certified Examiner completes these to determine whether an impairment is present.

Medical Status Exams

Medical Status Examinations, or MSEs, involve a deep dive into the complete medical history of a patient by a physician. We diagnose the injury in question while providing a medical exam to provide treatment recommendations.

Functional Capacity Evaluation

An employer may request a Functional Capacity Evaluation, or FCE, following an injury or illness. These comprehensive 1-day or 2-day exams assess an individual’s functional capacity. Our Occupation therapists and Physiotherapists provide recommendations and guidelines if necessary

Neuropsychological Assessments

Neuropsychological assessments test cognitive and mental functions, such as reasoning, mood, problem-solving, language use, and learning. These assessments help diagnose a patient, outline risks, and provide interventions to optimize health. Aceso Medical offers both 1-day and 2-day assessment options.

SAP/SAE Assessments

A SAP or Substance Use Professional assessment is typically requested following a positive drug test in the workplace. SAP and SAE assessments will identify whether an addiction is present. If required, a SAP or SAE will outline treatment recommendations, including counseling, substance treatment, or a referral to a specialist.
